The dreaded CEL is on and you can’t escape seeing it on your
dashboard. It has become a necessary
evil in today’s vehicles. For many of us
this light is a mystery and hints at some unseen danger in the guts of your
car. Others ignore it until it goes away, or just let it stay on. I doubt that anyone would recommend the
latter!
The check engine light (or malfunction indicator light as it
is sometimes known) is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma to
paraphrase Winston Churchill. One
misconception is that a code reader will reveal the exact problem. It is only one piece of information,
a single symptom of a possibly larger problem.
One thing is certain, unless you have the equipment and
expertise to troubleshoot a check engine light then you need a trained mechanic
